Founded in 1404, the University of Turin, is an Italian public research university located in the Piedmont of Italy. It is one of Europe’s oldest universities, and it continues to play a significant role in research and education. According to the most recent statistics from ANVUR, it is consistently listed in the top 5 Italian universities, and it is ranked third in Italy for research activity.
The University of Turin has educated and trained many Nobel prize winners such as:
– Renato Dulbecco, virologist and Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine in 1975, for his work on oncoviruses, which are viruses that can cause cancer when they infect animal cells.
– Rita Levi-Montalcini, neurologist and joint winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, for the discovery of nerve growth factor (NGF).
– Salvador Luria, bacteriologist and joint winner of the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, for his research on the replication process and viral genetic structure. He also demonstrated that bacterial resistance to viruses (phages) is genetically inherited.
